UK driving licences

What do I need to renew my driving licence online?

Once you have applied, DVLA will send you a confirmation email.

Where to apply

Post office:

To apply at a post office, you will need to go to a post office that deals with DVLA photocard licence renewal. What you will need to take with you is; your photocard licence if you have it and the fee of £21.50. If you have changed your name you will need to apply by post.

Post

To apply by post you will need to get a ‘D1 pack’ of forms from a post office that deals with DVLA photocard renewal or vehicle tax. What you will need to take with you is; a recent passport-type photo, your current photocard licence, a cheque or postal order for £17 payable to DVLA. If you have changed your name you will need to include identity documents.

Once you have applied at a post office or by post you are able to continue driving while you wait for your licence to arrive.

Renewing driving licence 70 or older

When you reach 70 years of age your driving licence will expire, which means that you will need to renew your driving licence if you wish to continue driving. If you do renew your licence you will have to renew it every three years after that point. The DVLA will send you a reminder and an application form for you to be able to renew as your 70th birthday approaches and every three years after. If you don’t renew your licence, you will legally not be able to carry on driving. If you do carry on driving you would be committing a serious offence which could lead to a large fine and having your car seized by the police.

How to renew your licence for 70 and older

If you are 70 or older, or if your birthday is within 90 days, you can renew your driving licence online for free. You can renew on the government website and you'll be given an ID code and instructions on how to renew.

By post

You'll be sent a D46P application form 90 days before your 70th birthday and every three years after by the DVLA. You will need to complete the form and return it back to the DVLA. If you haven't got the form, you can get a D1 application for a driving licence form, which you can get from a post office.

Medical conditions

When filling in the form to renew your driving licence you will be asked to declare any medical conditions that you may have and confirm that you meet the eyesight standards for driving. If you do not declare a condition or ability that may affect your driving you may be fined £1000.

New licence

When you get your new licence, you will need to check the details carefully to see if you need to wear prescription glasses or contact lenses when you drive, this will be shown as "01" on the back of your licence.
