Winter car maintenance

It's starting to get cold all over the UK which means that your car will also be getting cold and possibly freezing over. You don’t want to be driving around while your vehicle isn't in a safe condition, make sure you check the right things so you don’t end up having an accident.

Tires

Tires are very important to be up to scratch, especially during icy weather as the roads can be extremely dangerous. You will need to check the tires to see if they have any tears, splits or cracks. The most important thing that you will need to check would be the tires tread depth as this helps with traction and grip, which you will need to stop your vehicle from skidding all over the roads.

Windscreen wipers

Windscreen wipers are vital in order to keep your vision clear if it is either raining or snowing. As it is starting to get cold, we may see some parts of the country get snowfall. It is essential that you check your windscreen wipers, back and front, to see if they are up to scratch. These sometimes need replacing due to the rain/snow causing them to deteriorate and may cause wearing, splitting and bent frames. You will need to check if your windscreen wipers are being effective at wiping off your windshield of any rain/snow, if not you should replace them.

Engine

You will need to check the engine of your vehicle as it may get frozen if the weather is cold enough. A way to check your engine is to look at the vehicle's coolant levels and if the engine of your vehicle is too cold you may need anti-freeze. Anti-freeze is a liquid that lowers the freezing point of the water inside your vehicle and is used to pump through your engine to maintain the correct temperature needed for your vehicle.

According to Forbes, the best multipurpose anti-freeze is Valvoline MaxLife Engine Antifreeze and the best diesel anti-freeze is Shell Rotella ELC Nitrite Free Antifreeze.

Breaks

Breaks will be extremely important to be working as expected during the winter months as the stopping distance is vastly increased when the roads are icy. Your breaks could be worn which could make them less responsive or pull your car over to one side. If your brakes are starting to wear out, please make sure that you at least drive at slower speeds.
